Week 8

Acton Hero: Ken Zolot
Ken Zolot teaches us that we need to give children the opportunity to be creative and use their creativity in their own unique ways. While watching this video Ken says he doesn't like teachers who make the kids sit up straight and make them do their work a certain way. This makes me think of my background in childcare and how we as teachers to young children need to come up with creative activities and crafts that allow children to use their imagination and creativity. Instead of doing a craft where the teacher tells the children how the final result is supposed to look and everyone has to look the same to come out like the original finished product. Also as teachers we need to be creative in how we teach children. We need to come up with new innovative and fun ways that will help the children learn in a fun way while allowing them to explore and try new things which will show their creative sides. By doing this children will grow up continuing to use their creativity in their everyday life and they may use this creativity to be an entrepreneur or an inventor.
We need to remember "things are not as dreadful as they might look" as Ken Zolot says. We need to make the best of every situation and instead of having a negative attitude about it, be creative and think outside the box to come up with a solution to the problem. It is important to teach children to be accountable for their actions. By doing this it will teach them to also be punctual.

Things I learned this week/I want to remember:

- These things make up a perfect leader:
  - motivation
- self-awareness
- self-regulation
- empathy
- good social skills
- Through this weeks assignments I recognized I need to get better at my social skills and at being empathetic
- In my readings I found this and I really liked it "The drive for money is “the root of all evil” (1 Timothy 6:10)". It tells us that we need to not focus on the money aspect of things but do things to benefit others and ourselves. For example, don't pick a job you hate because it is great pay. Try to find something that is decent pay and something that you enjoy. When you are running a business don't get caught up in how much money you can make and how much you can charge people, you should also be focused on selling your product or service to help other people or to make them happy.
- Leadership is about 3 things:
1. Capability- capability to ask a question and hear an answer. take risks. try new things. keep learning, learn something everyday.
2. collaboration
3. character

Week 7

Acton Hero: Bud Brigham
Bud Brigham teaches us that we need to be the best we can be. We can learn to be our best selves by studying our religion and finding our core values. We can also study philosophy which will also help us find what we are looking for. Finding ourselves and being the best we can be may be the key to helping us overcome our biggest challenge. We need to surround ourselves with people who have similar values as we do because they will support us and help us become the best we can be. That is what I try to do; my friend circle is mainly people I know from church. That is what I liked about coming to Edmonton is I had many more LDS members around then I did living in a small town in New Brunswick. Instead of having one YSA ward in the whole Maritimes I have five YSA wards in Edmonton alone. When I was in grade 12 I went from my high school in New Brunswick with approximately five LDS kids (and being related to half of them) in my school to Rexburg for one semester where it was mostly LDS kids. That was a big difference, I think it is so great to have so many LDS members around me that have the same values that I do. Going to school growing up (mostly in high school) I was surrounded by inappropriate things (immodest clothes, inappropriate language, and inappropriate relationships) all the time. It was nice to have such a change for one semester in Rexburg.

Things I learned through readings:
- The customer is always right!
- We should offer to pay our employees to leave to see who is working for us because they like the company and want to stay with us and who is only in it for the money and will leave when a better deal comes along!
- save 10% of your income. Save part of your pay-check each time you get paid.

$100 Challenge Update:
This week I made $52 in my babysitting extraordinaire business.
